Krugersdorp is considered a mining and industrial city. The city was first established by owner and founder, M Pretorius, in 1887 with the mining of gold on the farm Paardplaats. It was named after then President Paul Kruger, and today gold, manganese, iron, asbestos and lime is mined here. Krugersdorp played a part in the Anglo-Boer War and was host to a concentration camp with about 6000 women and children.
