Situated in East Rand, Benoni is a medium town situated within the Ekurhuleni Municipality in Johannesburg. The town was established in 1904, and became a municipality in 1907 when the Town council was elected and Clr. R. Dobson was elected mayor. Benoni history dates back to the discovery of gold in this area which resulted in an influx of people for labour. Around 1912 a fire station and a town hall were built. In 1923 a new railways line from Dunswart through the present Benoni station and on to Apex was opened. Today the town is more focused on industrial services and is well known as the city of lakes. Benoni has more than 20 parks with walking and nature trails. For more information about the town visit or contact the Benoni Tourism Bureau. (May-15)
