Empangeni is a countryside town, a former South African rural village where sugarcane production led to the rapid development of the village later named a township subsequently become a town which was named after the Empangeni river. The town is situated within KwaZulu-Natal Province situated only 15 kilometers from Richards Bay. The main tourist attraction in the town is the Empangeni Art and Cultural History Museum situated at the old town hall. The town is part of the uMhlathuze local municipality.
