Port Alfred was established in the early 1820s. Originally it was two separate towns, Port Kowie as used to name the West bank by 1820 settlers arriving, and the East bank was named Port Francis. In 1839, William Cock was involved in canalising the present opening to the sea, which allowed sailing ships with heavy cargo to dock at the Wharf. In 1860, Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son visited and subsequently, Port Alfred was named after him. Port Alfred, situated between Port Elizabeth and East London, on the Kowie River, is well known for its beautiful beaches, temperate climate, river and deep sea fishing, and relaxed atmosphere, and the Royal Alfred Marina.
