Pietermaritzburg is the capital of Kwazulu-Natal, founded in 1838. It has a 'purist' Zulu name which is umGungundlovu. The name is thought to originate either from two Voortrekker leaders - Piet Retief and Gert (Gerrit) Maritz, or just from Piet Retief whose full name was Pieter Maurits Retief. The city produces Aluminium, timber and dairy, and has many educational institutes. One of the largest Indian populations in South Africa can be found here.
