Bloubergstrand means 'blue mountain beach' in Afrikaans. This is due to the perfect view of Table Mountain as seen through the mist from Bloubergstrand. The coastal town is situated about 20 minutes from Cape Town, forming the gateway to the West Coast. The area attracts many visitors, especially dog owners with the popular Blue Peter Restaurant being dog friendly as well as most of the beaches. On weekends the walkway along the beach is packed with joggers, people walking their dogs or taking a stroll with their kids. The main beach in Bloubergstrand is called Big Bay and is very popular amongst surfers and windsurfers. Big Bay hosts several surfing competitions throughout the year.
