Calitzdorp is situated half way between port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Though it is an old village, the architecture is still breath-taking such that one cannot be satisfied by just a single visit to the town. Queen Street is one of the oldest streets in town and begs a stroll to properly absorb the number of Edwardian, Victorian and Karoo-style buildings heavily influenced by English architecture. The typical little Karoo town of Calitzdorp is probably mostly recognized for its production of some of the country's best port wines. Calitzdorp have several restaurants, two galleries and a museum. Various enjoyable activities includes horse riding on trails, canoeing, fishing, hiking trails in the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, the Redstone Hills and at Retreat at Groenfontein, racing and organ recital. Birding in the hills and fynbos area are also more than rewarding.
