Grabouw lies in the Western Cape Province of South Africa 65 km south-east of Cape Town along the N2 highway. It lies on the Palmiet river in the Elgin Valley, between the beautiful Hottentots-Holland, Kogelberg and Groenland Mountains. Wilhelm Langschmidt, owner of the farm 'Grietjiesgat', where the village originated, named it after the German town Grabouw where he was born. Grabouw is the hub of the Elgin Valley, the largest single export fruit producing area in Southern Africa. It is known as the 'valley of apples' and the home of the popular Appletiser soft drinks.
