Maphelane Nature Reserve is the southernmost camp of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, situated on the south bank of the Mfolozi River mouth. The bay at Maphelane is sheltered by a tall, forested sand dune to the south and seaward by a low reef, which is largely exposed at low tide. This provides a sheltered launch area for ski-boats and ideal place for swimming and snorkelling. The reserve has a prolific birdlife; more than 200 species have been identified. The reserve has 40 campsites (without power) and ten well-equipped log cabins. Electricity is supplied by a generator which runs between 05h30 to 22h30 daily, and until 23h00 on Fridays. All visitors must provide themselves with drinking water; non-potable water is supplied for ablutions. There is a small curio shop with limited supplies. The road is often in poor condition; therefore, a 4 x 4 vehicle is recommended. The entrance gate is managed by the iSimangaliso Wetland authority and gate entry times are strictly enforced: summer (1 October - 31 March) 05:00 - 19:00 and winter (1 April - 30 September) 06:00 - 18:00. On Friday evenings and evenings prior to long weekends or provincial school holidays, visitors with bookings may enter the reserve until 21:00. (Apr 2021)
