Groendal Wilderness Area is situated on the end of the Groot Winterhoek Mountains in Uitenhage, Eastern cape Province. This area is rich in flora and fauna. The vegetation is predominantly fynbos with a great diversity of individual species. There are marked and unmarked trails in the wilderness but hikers are advised not to embark on a trail without a map. The major hikes are strenuous, need to be physically fit to embark on these trails. The hikers will come across a series of caves, paintings and artifacts as it is believed to have been the last refuge of the San in the Groot Winterhoek Mountains. Clean ablutions with toilets and showers are only at the Office Complex where the hikes start and end. The office also have permits for hikers, overnight camping, maps and information brochures. There are no overnight huts so bring own tents or spend a night on the caves and overhangs. There are four hiking trails which are the Blindekloof: 16 km; Upper Blindekloof: 32 km; Dam Trail: 34 km; Emerald Pool: 32 km. Accommodation includes lodge, lapa, picnic sites and campsite.
