Melville Koppies Nature Reserve is also a Johannesburg City Heritage Site. The reserve have indigenous, highveld grasses, flowers, and trees. There are different sections within the reserve named the Melville Koppies WEST, EAST and CENTRAL. The East is open daily for walks, Central is always locked and access always controlled, only people on organised tours and hikes are allowed. West is open daily but it is advisable to walk only on scheduled walks. In this reserve there are no electricity, braai, or picnic facilities, no tea shop, and certainly no manicured lawns because of the sensitive nature of the environment. There are taps and septic tank toilets on Melville Koppies Central. Guided tours are done on scheduled days but guided tours for schools, universities and special interest groups are done.
