Magaliesberg is divided into a large number of private properties. In the late 1970's the central area of the mountain was declared by the Province as the Magaliesberg Protected Natural Environment (MPNE). Rules were put in place so that private owners could not make changes to that part of their properties. The area stretches from east of Pretoria westwards to Rustenburg. Permits to visit some of the properties are available to the public. There are no formal entries to the area, but hundreds of small roads and access through private farms. Only a few landowners give access to the public, like The Mountain Club of South Africa, Mountain Sanctuary Park and Bergheim. (Feb-14).
