The Tswaing crater is situated 40km from Pretoria. The crater is 100m high and a kilometre in diameter, covered with indigenous trees, bushes and attracts various birdlife. There is a museum adjacent the crater and both are managed by National Flagship Institution. There is a 7.5km hiking trail at the crater which skirts the rim of the crater and then descends down to the lake, takes between 2 -3 hrs to complete, very accessible by foot. This crater is the only attraction of its kind in South Africa and is well kept as a natural and cultural heritage important for research, environmental education and community development amongst others.(Sep-13).
